Japanese Porcelain Imari bowl with Scalloped Edge 19th Century

A nice small (6 ¾" diameter) scalloped Imari bowl of birds, foliage and flowers in with underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze enamels in iron red, green, black and gilding. A ring of alternating cross hatches and red chrysanthemum designs separate these figures from a central medallion of flowers and stems drawn with cobalt underglaze. A blue cobalt line runs along just below the rim, which itself is gilded.

The outside of the bowl has Buddhist symbols in underglaze and three blue lines around the foot ring. The base is unglazed except for a central circle containing a porcelain mark of four characters.

The bowl measures 6 ¾" diameter by 2" tall.

Condition The condition is very good for the age, with no cracks and only one small chip on the inside of the foot ring that is not noticeable. There is gild loss on the rim and center designs. There is a kiln flaw that looks like a cut along the inside shoulder, which was glazed over during manufacture.

A nice piece to add a dimension to your Imari collection and presentation
