Black silk with velvet trim and watered silk ties adorned Great Great Great Grandmother's mid-century head covering in the early Victorian era. In amazingly good condition for the age and the fabrics, the main part of the medium size bonnet is silk with a lining of a brownish black cambric. A turned back 3" wide velvet brim ends on either side (below and covering the ear) with a 4" diameter silk rosette centered with a 1" velvet center. One moire (watered silk) tie is 22" in length while the other one is 16", and gives a decorative touch to what Grandma may have worn as a widow. There is a generous amount of fabric, allowing for an elaborate braid or hairdo. The 150 year old bonnet is in excellent condition, looking as though it had been worn very little, if at all. It is perfect for your collection or display of mourning clothing. Thank you for visiting.
