500 Scraps in 98 Page Victorian Scrapbook

This 8" x 10-1/2" 98-page scrapbook (including inside covers) from the 1880s holds an amazing 528 scraps (plus many tiny ones that I didn't count). Items in the book include Rewards of Merit, commercially printed and hand-cut die-cuts, Victorian calling cards, trade cards, early valentines, and more. The first page says, "Presented to Lizzie Hanna by her affectionate friend, Herman Meyers". Several trade cards are ads from Philadelphia and New York, but most are local ads, some with the street addresses, but not the town. They include 1882 Hood's Great Up-Town Millinery and Fancy Store; Public Ledger Steam Job Printing, Philadelphia; New Home Sewing Machines; Smith's Overcoats; Carter's Mucilage; Unger's Delicacies, Fine Groceries; F. Laurent and sons Easter Novelties; J. & P. Coats (We Never Fade Black Americana)Thread; J.E. Burrows Dry and Fancy Goods; Vaseline: Ayers Sarsaparilla; J. Hamson & Son Soap Manufacturers & Grease Collectors; Charles Raymond Sewing Machines; Zabinski Boots & Shoes, N.Y.; Prof. Horsford's Phosphatic Baking Powder, etc. My favorite advertisement is an 8-1/2" x 3" golden yellow key valentine, "F.C. Smith & Co. Groceries, Fine Butter a Specialty" from New York. "Gargling Oil Liniment" is advertised by three pudgy comic baseball players. An alphabet page from a McLoughlin Bros. book, some small zoo cards, some Sunday School verses, Christmas Greetings, a fabric label, and small practice handwriting example with a picture of a dog, beautiful ladies, dogs and cats are more of the interesting items in this thick scrapbook. It is hard to find complete books, so when these old scrapbooks are intact, I sell them that way, rather than dismantling them for the ads. The pages are very discolored from age and old glue, edges are chipped and starting to disintegrate, and spine has been mended, not unusual for a 125 year old scrapbook. Some of the scraps are in excellent condition, some are not, but there are so many that it provides a great history of the era, and really fun to look at. Thank you for visiting.
