Gentleman's 19th Century Roller Printed Linen Hanky
In unused condition, still with its original sizing, this large linen handkerchief was probably a gift for a man from the Victorian era. Not for a formal gathering, and not for working in the fields, it nevertheless is a finely made accessory for a man who may have owned or worked in an emporium. The 17-3/4" x 16-3/4" handkerchief has a 1-1/4" hemstitched border of a geometric roller printed navy blue design on an off-white background, reminiscent of quilting fabric of the day. Double the size of a lady's hanky, this gentleman's handkerchief has one pin head size brown age spot. It is otherwise in mint condition, a testimony to the care taken in storing such items. This, too, is a piece of textile history, and I have been fortunate to have had the chance to own and study such ordinary textiles that were not commonly preserved like the ladies' fancy pieces. Thank you for visiting.
