Standing a hair over 2" high with an inside diameter of 3-1/8", this charming hand painted cup shows a Dutch girl pulling on a rooster's tail as he tries to get away from her near a canal with birds and a windmill in the background. He is running so fast that there is a slight blur on the side! Made by Georg Schmider Zell in the early 20th century, the cup is marked on the underside, "Made in Austria Dec 350" and was produced from 1907 to 1928. I attempted to collect this polychromed pottery years ago because I liked the naive art that is similar to Quimper with a cream background and primitive, often humorous, figures. Each piece of Zell pottery displays a different scene, many with children and animals and always with a windmill. The pottery is porous and chips easily, but this cup is in good condition with no chips, although there is slight crazing with lots of wear on the underside. A small stripe of green is centered on the handle, matching th green lining the rim. This is a fun piece, but I must warn you! Once you have one piece, the search for more is an addiction! Thank you for stopping by.
