WWII Aircraft Recognition, USN Training Manual, 1943
Published in January 1943 by the Naval Aviation Training Division, "Aircraft Recognition" was an upgrade in format showing aerial perspective in photographs rather than the earlier "silhouette" views used for identification in the prior publication. The book was designed to be a reference, and not a proponent of the "WEFT" system, which was abandoned by the Army, Navy, and Great Britain to be replaced by the U.S. Navy System of Recognition. The 8" x 11" navy blue faux leather binder holds information and photos of ninety-four airplanes from different countries: 4 from Italy, 22 from Germany, 19 from Japan, 13 from the United Kingdom, 11 from the U.S. Army, and 25 from the U.S. Navy. As aircraft became obsolete, pages were able to be removed from the binder, and as new planes were introduced, pages could be added. Examples throughout the manual include the U.S. Navy "Hellcat", the U.S. Army "Thunderbolt", the R.A.F. "Spitfire", Japan's Kawasaki "Type 97", Italy's "MC-202", and Germany's "Flying Pencil". The Foreword and Preface precede the Identification Symbols and Glossary pages before the airplane identification pages complete the manual. The book is in very good condition with a couple of closed tears on the cardboard separators and browning on the edges of the pages from age. If you know a World War II, aeronautical, or history buff, this would make a perfect gift. One time marked "Restricted" it is a unique piece of history! Thank you for looking.
