It is very rare to find the complete set of the twelve Colgate advertising booklets illustrated by famous children's book illustrator, Jessie Wilcox Smith. Published in 1914 by the Dodd, Mead and Company, each of the 5-1/4" x 3-1/2" booklets has eight numbered black and white pages plus the cover printed in full color on glazed and gilt-edged wraps, and taken from her Mother Goose Book published by the same company in 1914. The same advertisement, "Morning Rush on the Tube", is printed on the inside cover of each book, and a different ad, "Good Teeth, Good Health", is printed on the inside of the back cover of each book. Outside back cover of each book has a color picture of a baby holding a Cashmere Bouquet talcum powder tin. Four pages of rhymes only, and four pages of illustrations with rhymes are printed in black and white. The twelve books are titled: "Hush-a-bye Baby On the Tree Top and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "Little Miss Muffet Sat on a Tuffet and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "Little Bo-peep and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "Jack and Jill Went Up the Hill and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "Ring Around a Rosie and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "Rain, Rain, Go Away and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "There Was an old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "One Foot Up the other Foot Down and other Mother Goose Melodies"; "See Saw, Margery Daw and other Mother Goose Melodies"; and Curly Locks, Curly Locks, Wilt Thou Be Mine and other Mother Goose Melodies". It was noted that all were copyrighted by the Colgate Company in 1913, and also by Good Housekeeping Magazine. Although the inside pages are age-toned, they are in good condition with no pages missing, and the covers have slight wear on the spines and edges, corners bumped, slight smudging, and the expected small dings of almost one hundred years. The amazing thing is that they have stayed together all these years! Jessie Willcox Smith's illustrations continue to give pleasure to young and old alike, and are truly a treasure.
