Claude Lorrain & Richard Earlom 'Liber Veritatis' - 'Book of Truth' Sepia Mezzotint - 116

Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) was an accomplished draftsman, painter, and etcher who is famous for his landscape, coastal, and harbor scenes. His serene and intimate vistas are based on his direct observations of the Roman Campagna. He assembled his drawings into the Liber Veritatis, or "Book of Truth," which is composed of approximately 200 works. Begun in 1630's, he meticulously maintained this book until his death, after which it was printed into two volumes, each with 100 plates from 1777-1819. While it was in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire at Chastsworth, Richard Earlom (1743-1822) created a set of engravings in the style of the originals, which were included in the volumes. In 1819 a third volume of 100 prints by Earlom was published by Boydell, and was separately numbered 1-100.

Framed, this piece measures 15 ¼ x 19 ¼ inches. Unframed, it is 8.4 x 10.6 inches. It is in excellent condition. Its estimated value is $1,300-2,000. It is hand signed and dated at the bottom: Number 116, Sep. 1, 1775
