Man with Child Gilt Work Japanese Tsuba

This is a stunning Tsuba depicting a man or scholar and a young boy or apprentice. They are shown wandering through the Japanese pines. This is an exquisite tsuba with plenty of openwork and a touch of gilt to highlight the scene. This piece is in excellent condition with slight wear, associated with the age. This piece is rather large and measures 3 1/8 x 3 inches. This is a highly detailed piece as shown in the faces and robes of the figures.

A tsuba is a Japanese sword guard. I think it's fascinating to imagine one of these beautiful designs in action as an integral component of a warriors sword.
