Michael Vollbracht Screened Bunny Rabbit Fabric Silk Panels
On the selvedge edge of each panel is printed the copyright symbol, 1982, and Vollbracht Too. Panels measure 55" x 47".
The silk is likely a shantung as there is variation in thickness of wefts and some knots or nubs in the surface texture. This is most visible in the photo close-up of a single bunny. There is a good deal of variation in light and shade of the turquoise blue background. The bunny silhouettes are a flat, pale blue-pink. The wide borders are solid black with a thin off-white border.
Although at one time these panels were intended for fashion design, they are so exquisite, and embody the exuberance of Mr. Vollbracht's early 1980's work (as well as the transition to a new art and fashion era from the 1970s), they also have merit as art, independent of garment construction, and are rare, untouched mementos of some of Mr. Vollbracht's most charming, inspired designs on silk. Mr. Vollbracht often interpreted his screened designs like this one in kimono styles and single-shouldered long draped columns with shoulder swag.
During this period, Mr. Vollbracht's designs were favorites of Diana Ross, Elizabeth Taylor, and Joanne Carson (ex-wife of Johnny Carson, an important backer of this phase of his career).
