Art Deco Yardley Enamel Flying Pegasus Horse Compact/Carryall
In the 1930s the carryall was introduced to women's fashion accessories. Some had chain handles, while others, like this one did not. Marked Yardley New York, this gold-tone compact carryall has cream and blue enameling of a flying Pegasus intaglio décor. Called a Quadruple, the interior contains mirror, lip-tissue/bill holder, compartments for lipstick, rouge, powder and perfume. The thumbpiece houses a coral cabochon.
Scarce, and very desirable art deco piece, but does has its flaws. There is a small dent in the top which you don't see unless its in just the right angle and lighting. It is missing its perfume, and the mirror is showing separation of lead backing from glass where it had been glued. Also has scuff marks appropriate with age, but no damage to enamel. We leave any cleaning to new owner, and the compartments do have cosmetic remains in them. Measures 4.75 inches by 3 inches.
NOTE: Dark areas, particularly at blue enamel top edge, is from shadow. This was difficult to photograph.
