La Vielle aux Logues (The Old Rag-Woman) an etching by Whistler

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was an American- British-based painter, etcher & lithographer. His famous signature for his paintings was in the shape of a stylized butterfly possessing a long stinger for a tail. During the summer of 1858 Whistler traveled through France, and later produced a group of etchings known as "Twelve Etchings from Nature (The French Set) of which this is one of them. 'The Old Rag-Woman', the first of Whistler's female profiles, inspired numerous artists, and was one of Whistler's own favorites. "The French Set" (the title page and 12 etchings) was first printed in Paris in an edition of 20. This particular etching is from the 3rd state which was printed sometime after 1859. The plate size is 8" x 5 7/8". It is signed with both the butterfly signature and the name in the lower right side. Regarding condition, this piece looks to be in good condition; there are no rips or tears or marks. It's a very old frame, so I am sure the backing does not meet today's standards. I have not inspected the piece outside of the frame.
