This fan is 13 1/2" in height and 2' wide when opened out. The frame is black wood decorated with gold. The fabric is in good condition on the front, except for a spot in the upper right hand corner and some wear on the wood side slat. There are no tears in the lace. The back shows wear in several places(see photos). Mourning fans were an important part of life, especially among the upper class. The mourning period lasted one year and one day, and women(especially close family) were expected to wear only black (this lightened up as time went on). Besides being a big help before air conditioning, the mourning fans efficiently covered tears and grief. Please email me with any questions, and thank-you for shopping here at Something Wonderful.
