Vintage Nutcracker Wearing Red Helmet

This nutcracker measures approx. 13 1/2" tall and 5" wide. He is wearing a red helmet and dressed in a red suit with blue pants. He is wearing black boots. Nutcrackers were being crafted in Austria before 1650. At first they were handcrafted gifts given at Christmas. Legend has it that nut crackers had "Miraculous" powers such as bringing good luck and warding off evil spirits. The bared their teeth at the demons and evil doers and stood guard over the family. They became very elaborate and varied. They are now made, collected and displayed year round, in many countries. This nutcracker had no country of origin stamped on it.
