This look at the Civil War (U.S.)is made up of 10 books, each one written by a man who was there and each from a very different perspective. 1. Army Life in a Black Regiment by Thomas Wentworth Higgins covers the First South Carolina band of 800 ex-slaves and a handful of freedmen, written by the man chosen to lead this group. 2. Confederate Operations in Canada and New York by John W. Headley, a man who spied for the Confederate States and later became Kentucky's Secretary of State. 3. Hard Tack and Coffee, by John D. Billings. He discusses subjects that include tents, rations, hospitals, and the signal system in depth and with humor. 4. Destruction and Reconstruction by Richard Taylor, tells his ideas of what the causes of the war were, as well as the history of events he witnessed. 5. Three months in the Southern States by Arthur J.L. Fremantle was one of many Europeans who came to see for themselves what was happening. A British military, he took leave to come here and report on what he saw.6. Mosby's Rangers by James J. Williamson, a member of the Rangers when it started, though he was not a Virginian. Officially known as the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, but known as Mosby's Rangers, a controversial group. 7. Campaigning with Grant by Horace Porter. The author's intention was to recount the daily acts of General Grant in the field, with personal traits and habits and explain his intentions. 8. Reminiscences of the Civil War by John B Gordon, a General of the Confederate Army. One general's personal experiences. 9 & 10. A Rebel War Clerk's Diary by John B. Jones, Vol.I and Vol II. Jones was an author and journalist, who volunteered to serve the Confederate government, and started a journal on the war. His goal was to make his diary as full and complete as possible. Unfortunately, he died just a few months before the publication of the diary that established his literary reputation. This set is leather-bound, gilt-edged, reproduced in the early 1980's from the originals printed in the late 1800's.
