Hand-sewn, layer after layer! Mais OUI! I have made hats of antique woven straw and it is a painstaking task, so I can imagine what the long-ago French "modiste" went through making this without magnifiers or electric lights! The patience and craftsmanship that went into this charming chapeau are amazing. Just look at the teeny, tiny stitches on the underside! Each row of antique straw is joined together by hand-sewn work to complete this millinery gem. Multiple, seasoned red ribbon bows adorn the hat with elegant, cascading tails in the back adding just the right touch of drama. A few areas of old adjustment or possibly a repair are noted at the brim as the photos reveal. The original string is still attached to this wonderful hat that Mlle Marie (not included in the sale) is modeling. She is loathe to take it off, but I think it might fare somewhat better on a slighter smaller lady, perhaps 12-14" in height. Marie is a size 2 and is about 15 inches, and while the hat is quite saucy the way she is wearing it, I think it's a tad small for her. This lovely chapeau is 3 1/2" from brim to brim and a perfect, hard-to-find size for a smaller fashion lady.
