French Fashion Doll/French Doll MAGNIFICENT Napoleon III Veilleuse!

Layaway always available. This item was found in FRANCE, but will be shipped from the USA to save you loads on postage. This is only the second IMPERIAL toy veilleuse we have ever found, inside or outside museums! It is hand painted (check out those feathers on the eagle!) in real gold on the finest white French porcelain. It was made in honor of Napoleon III. His wife, Empress Eugenie, was the inspiration for the famous BRU SMILER! The veilleuse is COMPLETE and in pristine condition! It includes all the icons of his reign - the laurel leaves, the bees of the Bonaparte family, and his person symbol, the eagle. Veilleuses graced the nightstands of every French home before the invention of electricity. They served the dual purpose of being a night light and a beverage warmer. Little French girls sipped a cup of warm honeyed milk, hot chocolate or a soothing herbal tea while their Papa or Maman read a bedtime story. Of course their dolls had to have one, too! The little cup-like receptacle was for lamp oil and a wick floated in the oil until it burned out, by which time, the child was asleep. This rare treasure will be shipped double boxed to make sure it survive well into yet another century. Circa 1875-1880.
