Antique Daguerreotype Ninth-Plate Young Lady

Antique Daguerreotype (1840-1855) of a young lady who, by a handwritten name inside the case, is identified as Abagail (Bowersock) Tasker. The "k" might be an "h". This is a ninth-plate (2" x 2-1/2" image size) daguerreotype and is housed in an overall good condition, union case. We believe the photos show the minimal wear to the case. Further, there is quite a bit of tarnish around the photo.

Because it took so long to produce photographs back then, smiling was difficult to do for extended periods of time. But, more in line with no smiling, was the fact that during this time in history people intentionally used serious expressions. Having your picture taken was likened to having a portrait painting.
