Vintage Amberina Crackle Satin Glass Vase

What an exquisite example of Amberina Satin Crackle Glass. This little vase has rich colors that go from saffron - to watermelon - to deep ruby red, all in a wonderful velvety satin matte crackle finish. The crimped ruffled top has a clear satin rim. It stands 5 inches high and 4 inches at its widest points on top.

I am unable to verify the maker after many hours of research as there are no markings and no original maker label. With no pontil mark the piece appears to be mold blown.

Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, scratches or repairs. The piece was part of an estate collection of fine glass, probably dates from the 1930's or earlier and is an outstanding example of art glass of exquisite coloring and good finish.

History: Amberina Glass is blended color glass in which the lower part, a yellowish amber, merges into a ruby-red color higher in the vessel. It was first patented in 1883 for the New England Glass Company at East Cambridge, Mass., and was produced extensively there and by the successor company, the Libbey Glass Company at Toledo, Ohio, into the 1920's. The base metal was an amber glass containing some gold, and the tinges were developed by applied reheating. The glass was sometimes blown in molds. A wide range of wares were produced by the New England Glass Company. Other American makers of amberina glass followed.

The velvety matte finish of Satin Glass is achieved through treatment with hydrofluoric acid. Crackle glass gets its crackle effect when hot blown glass is rapidly cooled, typically by immersing it in water or wet sawdust that is much cooler than the glass. The outer layer of the hot glass forms cracks because of the temperature difference. The glass is then reheated with the cracks of the outer layer giving crackle glass its distinctive appearance. Quality crackle glass is free of any chips or unwanted cracks. It is fairly heavy and thick, and they should not have many imperfections, such as bubbles, in the glass.
