From the days of Downton Abbey, this is a leather covered English match safe/striker from the Edwardian Era (early 1900s). The word "LIGHT" is embossed on the top. The box itself is metal. The lid pops open at a point on the side to reveal a small storage area for wooden matches down below (we cut some matches down to size just to see). There is a cool, working metal striker plate on top which also protects the matches. At the back, there is some wearing of the black, crosshatched leather, which is elegantly soft. My young son loves this for camp outings. He says he could imagine Tolkien tucking it into his trouser pocket along with his pipe...lovely, masculine piece from days gone by-
