LARGE Antique Nineteenth Century Five Figure English Staffordshire Flatback Spill Vase

An incredible example of the much loved "flatback" pieces, it stands 14" tall. A spill vases is a small cylindrical vase or wall-hanging vase which resemble a bud vase. This piece has provenance from an extensive, fine Belgian collection.

These figures were designed to set on a mantle piece with all the color and design work in the front of the piece and the back being flat and without ornamentation. This example features a handsome pair of Scottish people with bagpipes and traditional attire. A spotted dog sits betwen them and two sheep stand/recline below them. The piece is layered, as if the people and dog are standing on a small hill above the sheep. The colors are brilliant in shades of royal blue, orange, pink and green. The details of the young people's clothing are especially interesting, right down to the tips of their pointed black shoes. A large tree serves as the vase portion, it has a rugged shape and is lovely in muted shades of sage green, spring green and brown.

The measurements are: 14" tall, 7" wide at the center, 6 3/8" x 3" at the base. The vase opening is 2 3/4" x 1 3/4". The young man measures 6 1/2" tall and the young lady 7" tall. It survives in good antique condition. There are some slight indentations under the glaze on the base (see photo). There are some slight areas of color loss as is expected with age and use. The back has a hairline crack to the glaze at the top of the vase (does not go through to inside). No major cracks or chips are noted; please look carefully at the photos as these are a part of the description.

It is a wonderfully charged figurine, with animals and people depicted in a happy setting. It would be delightful on a mantel or in a English or French kitchen setting.
