This box charmed us because it was custom made for a baby or young girl in 1938, bearing her name on one side and the date on the other. It is typical of painted piece from Germany and Holland, it was purchased in Holland.
The box is made of pine. It has lovely old hinges which are "three part". All exterior side panels have two layers, with a decorative hand cut frame revealing an inner medallion. The lid and base have layered molding cuts. The bottom of the box still retains the sellers ticket.
The painting is enthusiastic and colorful. Flowers and leaves adorn the lid in bright shades of red, yellow, green and blue. The front panels are ornamented with flowers and hearts. The side panels bear the name and date in script. The back panel is left blank, as is typical. The background colors are black and brick red. Chinese red has been used for accent on the lid and base.
It measures 10" wide, 5" tall and 5 1/4" deep. The interior measures 4 5/8" deep It is good condition with normal wear as is typical with age. The colors still remain bright and the designs are intact.
It is an endearing piece because it documents it's place in history. One can imagine the little girl who once owned it; who tucked treasures and dreams away in this precious box.
