French Majolica Pichet "Chat Mandoliniste a la Veste Verte"

This figural pitcher was produced by the Orchies Saint-Amand Hammage factory in France as part of a special figural collection. It is a fine example which has provenance from an extremely large French collection.

The Saint-Armand factory was in the north of France, very close to Belgium. It is an old factory which produced many pieces of fine majolica. The cat character is a favored piece amongst the figural collection.

The yellow cat holds a mandolin in his paws. He is very dapper, with a red bow tie, black pants and a green jacket. His tail forms the handle and the spout is formed from his little "O" shaped mouth. The interior of the pitcher is a deep rose as is typical of French majolica.

He measures 9 1/8" tall, 8 3/4" wide from spout to tail, the base 4 1/4" x 3 1/2" at the widest points. He survives in very good antique condition, with no visible cracks and only very minute chipping to the glaze.
