Playful cherubs surround the sides of this pretty gilded metal match holder. It comes from the south of France and dates towards 1900.
The match holder is of cast metal which has been gilded. The 2-D design is delightful, with cherubs in a garden setting, creating crowns and festoons out of flowers. The faces of the cherubs are detailed, you can easily see their expressions of playfulness and joy. The edge of the holder has a delicate border of flowers. The bottom a 1/4" wide band which mimics a tree branch with pebbles below it in a circle. The base is a thin slab of Brescia marble (the holder is attached to the marble with one screw).
It measures 2 1/4" tall, 1" deep; the base is 1 7/8" square. It is in very good antique condition, the marble is rough at the corners from use The holder is in solid state and still holds it's shape and detail in design.
It is a charming example.
