The chromolithograph on the front cover board of this beautiful missel is just exquisite both in symbolism and design. The precious book originates from Amsterdam.
The missel is small, measuring 3 3/4" x 2 3/4" x 1/2" thick: just the right size to fit into a pocket. The cover design is elaborate, with the Baby Jesus sitting in the clouds, with rays of light shining all around him. Above him float five cherubs, the light below him illuminates a gilded, jeweled chalice. Sheaths of wheat and a bunch of grapes symbolize the Holy Communion.
The interior binding is equally luxurious. The endpapers are are filled with a gilded repeating pattern. The celluloid cover boards and spine are put together with linen. The black text is framed by red inked scrolls. There is a frontispiece engraving of Jesus.
It is in very good antique condition; the celluloid is worn from the bottom two right corners as is expected with age. There is some light scratching to the spine. Otherwise, the graphic retains the original jewel tone colors and gilding, and the binding is sound.
It is an unusual edition for a collector, or would be charming in a vignette with other items.
