Fine Framed Miniature Portrait of Marie Antoinette (after Louise-Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun)

This painting was purchased in Paris from a collection of painted miniatures. We are not sure of the age of this beautiful piece, certainly from the 20th century, most likely from the second half. We do find the quality of the work in keeping with the beautiful paintings on ivory of the previous centuries and present this charming piece in that light.

The exquisite painting is based on the work of Louise-Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun). The artist (signed "Ruby") has faithfully followed this famous work faithfully, the only difference is in the color of the dress (pink not blue). The detailing is beautiful and fine. Her facial features are delicate as are the lace accents to her dress. The painting is on a wafer wafer, in the manner of portrait miniatures of the eighteenth century.

The frame is of gesso, and elaborately accented in a Florentine manner. There are two shades of gilt, which give depth and texture to each surface. The interior frame contains an oval with a sunburst edging. The portrait is placed under glass within the this inner frame. Fanciful raised cutouts flank this inner frame to reveal a mirrored background beneath. The dept and mirror reflections give added luxury to the frame. The back of the frame is covered in velvet, with a small metal hook for hanging.

The entire frame measures: 8 3/4" x 7 7/8". The inner portrait measures: 3 1/2" x 2 1/2". The portrait is in excellent condition with no color loss. There are no visible cracks to the glass. There are so very slight chips to the gesso edging as is expected with age and use.

It is a beautifully done example, reminiscent of 18th century miniatures, with a much beloved subject.
