A fine and unusual example, it is heavy and carved in relief. It dates from 1900 and comes from a fine Parisian collection.
The stone that was used for this exquisite bottle is a delicious mix of black, caramel, beige and pale grey. You can see the banded design in the sandstone along the back side, and the agate deposits along the side. A jaunty little monkey has been carefully hand carved, his facial detail is exquisite. He has food in his hand and seems to walk across the front of the bottle. The stopper of the bottle is of the same substance as the body and is in a beautiful domed shape. There is a carved bone spoon attached to a cork. The base has a hand carved ring which serves as a foot. This detail in particular adds to the fineness of the piece as it took skill to create. The piece is beautifully polished, which took time and skill.
The bottle measures: 2 7/8" tall, 1" across at bottom, 5" circumference at widest middle, the monkey measures 1 3/4" tall. The bottle is in excellent condition, with no visible cracks or chips.
It is a stunning and unusual Chinese snuff bottle.
