Oval Framed French Hand Painted “Scene Galante” (on canvas) after Boucher

We are not sure of the age of this beautiful painting on canvas, certainly from the 20th century, most likely from the second half. It was purchased in Paris, with a group of painted miniatures. We do find the quality of the work in keeping with the beautiful paintings on ivory of the previous centuries and present this charming piece in that light.

The scene is after the original work of the eighteenth century artist, Francois Boucher who was known for his pastoral paintings.

The painting is done on canvas. It depicts a mother and her four children, enjoying a sunny springtime day. The girls listen to their brother read poetry from a book, the youngest girl places flowers in her mother's bonnet. There is a beautiful lake in the background. Each detail has been carefully depicted, the ribbons and folds in the clothes, the expression on each person's face. Their hair is depicted with life like detail, with ringlet curls and soft waves. The modern artist has made a very faithful painting from the work of the great 18th century master.

The frame is of plaster/wood and is ornamented in the Venetian style with gilt scalloped edges and gilt arabesques. The back of the frame is covered in French paper (from an old book) and has the words (written in pencil) Boucher and the number 9H/561. It measures:6 1/2" x 5 1/4" oval.

This little beauty was probably sold to the traveling tourist of the day, who wanted to bring home a small piece of wonderful France. It serves the same purpose for us today, adding elegance and a French touch to any small space.
