Oval Framed French Hand Painted “Scene Galante” (on canvas) after Watteau

This painting was purchased in Paris with a group of painted miniatures. We are not sure of the age of this beautiful piece, certainly from the 20th century, most likely from the second half. We do find the quality of the work in keeping with the beautiful painted miniatures of the previous centuries and present this charming piece in that light.

The scene is after the original work of one of the most brilliant and original artists of the eighteenth century, Antoine Watteau (1684–1721), who had an impact on the development of Rococo art in France.

The painting is done on canvas. It portrays a young suitor, who is on bended knee declaring his love to a young lady. The young lady seems to have little interest and looks away. A cupid statue stands to her right. They are in a charming outdoor setting, with trees and green grass. The details are fine, you can clearly see the expressions on their faces, The details of their clothing, flowers and leaves. It is a faithful copy of a master painting by a modern artist.

The frame is of plaster/wood and is ornamented in the Venetian style with gilt scalloped edges and gilt arabesques. The back of the frame is covered in French paper (from an old book) and has the words (written in pencil) Watteau and the number 9H/585. It measures:6 1/2" x 5 1/4" oval.

This little beauty was probably sold to the traveling tourist of the day, who wanted to bring home a small reminder of France. It serves the same purpose for us today, adding elegance and a French touch to any small space. L270 165
