An absolutely beautiful and colorful example of French Faience Quimper, It was made by the Henriot Factory, in Brittany, France.
It is a lovely size, measuring 4 1/2" tall,, 9" wide (side to side at handles) and 3 1/2" wide front to back at base. A charming hand painted scene adorns the front, picturing a young man playing a flute and a young lady (with the traditional tall headdress) holding a bouquet of flowers. They sit in a yellow fields with large bouquets of orange, blue and yellow flowers at their backs. The handles are in the form of yellow flowers with dotted centers and blue backs. The design on the back panel features rust, red, yellow and blue flowers, with green fern leaves.
A border of butterscotch and blue is along all edges. The inside edge has the addition of a French green. The bottom of the piece is signed (the personnel working at the Henriot factory marked their production "Henriot Quimper" with a number (in this case 71) for the specific form).
It is in very good condition. There is crazing to the glaze (as is typical with age and use) on the interior and exterior and handles. The design remains bright and colorful. The jardiniere sits level on the tabletop.
These older pieces of French Quimper are just so charming compared to today's production. The rich colors and serene country scenes add a small touch of the "French life" to any room.
