This is a large French cafe tin, with beautiful and bright metallic coloring. It is from Aix-en-Provence and dates from 1915-1920.
A very proud rooster stands on a basket in a central medallion on the front of the tin. The words, "au coq Gauloise" marque deposee indicated that he is a patented representative of the coffee company. along the bottom panel the words "Grillerie Moderne de Cafes and Societe Francois Preve, Aix en Provence" indicate the maker and area that the tin came from. The two side panels have large floral bouquets and the words "Cafe grand moka" in the upper corner. The back panel gives a testimony to the flavor and quality of the cafe, instructions for preparation and cooking.
The design of the tin is in keeping with the period. Bright reds, blues golds and yellow reflect in the light. The tin is large, measuring 10 1/2" tall, 5 1/2" square. It is in good condition for it's age, with normal wear to the design. The lid dips slightly in the center (this can be pounded straight, but we like to leave that decision to the final owner). The sides of the lid are a little uneven from wear.
It is a wonderful accent piece for a French country kitchen!
