This is an elegant and stunning example of French Renaissance Faience. It bears the mark of Gien/France on the bottom.
A hand painted central figure features the Nymph Amphitrite (wife of Neptune) on a dolphin, her favorite animal, the dolphin, who swims in a French blue sea. The image is framed in a highly decorative cartouche at the center of the vase. She is placed on a midnight blue background and holds a rust-colored scarf which floats from her hand around her body. The body of the vase is hand painted with foliage and flowers in shades of amber, French blue, midnight blue, deep green and yellow. The pristine white background gives the colors additional richness. The handle of the pitcher is in deep midnight blue, with a gold strip and white and blue dots.
The height is 9 1/4" :the top of the pitcher measures: 2 3/4" across. The bottom base measures 3 7/8" in circumference. The body of the pitcher measures 6 1/2" wide, front to back. the handle measures 5 1/4" long. The central hand painted figure measures 4" x 3".
The vase is in very good condition. The colors remain rich and vibrant. There are no noticeable chips or cracks.
