Domed Top Antique Leather Stationery Box
The interior has the original dividers which are also Gilded and provide four different storage compartments all with the original paper lining. Two of the smaller sub dividers are missing as shown in the photographs. The lid itself is lined with a beautiful cream silk this has slight wear at the front of the lid but apart from that is in very good condition and the colours of the silk and leather really compliment each other. There is one slight bit of damage that you can hardly see and in fact I had not realised it was there until we saw the photographs it is at the lower back of the lid on the right hand side.
The box would have been used to contain Stationery items such as envelopes and paper and any other writing related material. I love the Wikipedia explanation of the meaning of the word Stationery being:
"Originally the term "stationery" referred to all products sold by a stationer, whose name indicates that his book shop was on a fixed spot, usually near a university, and permanent, while medieval trading was mainly Peddlers (including Chapmen, who sold books) and others (such as farmers and craftsmen) at non-permanent markets such as fairs. It was a special term used between the 13th and 15th centuries in the manuscript culture".
A really delightful little Stationery box indeed that would make a lovely piece of desk or table top furniture that is ready to use and I am sure would give many years of service.
The measurements are approx 18.5cm, 11cm and 14cm high
