JACQUART : 1798 Museum Quality Antique French Empire Vermeil Sterling Sugar Tongs

Very fine offering of rare sterling silver sugar tongs generously coated with 22K gold. These tongs bear the maker's punch for Marc Jacquart, who began work in 1798 in France. Marc Jacquart's work is mentioned in The Connaissance des Arts Collection: French Master Goldsmiths; one of a handful of mastersmiths considered of sufficient importance for inclusion. His work appears in museum collections around the world, rarely in auctions held by Sotheby's, and in the finest personal collections. An unusual opportunity for the serious collector, these 1st Empire sugar tongs are decorated with a stunning cartouche in which the goddess Ceres stands erect, holding a cornucopia and sheaf of wheat. Above her is a stylized sun, and beneath, the moon and the stars. All on a finely textured ground; affixed to the body with top and sides modestly enhanced with a field of bright cut engraved stars. The ends comprise a fabulous acanthus, foliate and foliate confection, with more finely textured accents. At the top of the tongs, there is a bright cut engraved circle, clearly intended for a monogram. There is no monogram. So the piece may be personalized for your own family legacy. The tongs are in very good to excellent condition. The only flaw I find is a approximate pin point size bit of wear on one of the ends, and some very minor gold loss also wear related. As the tongs are in the 200 year old range, a bit of wear may be perhaps forgiven. The tongs are fully marked with maker's punch, .800 silver guarantee (Coq 2), and the Paris city and department guarantees for medium items. This exceptional find precisely the sort we want to offer our customers; elegance, beauty and historical importance combined.

Dimensions: Weight 60 grams. Length 6", width at the top 1", and width between the end 1.5".
