A fine antique French tortoiseshell box of exceptional quality. The cover of this large circular box features a highly detailed, hand painted classical scene of Venus and Cupid.

Tortoise shell containers such as this were fashionable luxury items during the 18th and 19th centuries and are highly collectible today.

This magnificently large sized tortoiseshell bonbonniere is truly an exceptionally fine museum quality item.

The painting is exceptional in both color and detail. The tortoise shell box is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. The bottom of the box shows light surface wear consistent with age and use. Such a beautifully preserved French tortoise shell bonbonniere is a rare find.
