Antique ivory Christ figure, hand carved crucifix in a gilt wood frame, museum quality.
This is an exquisite and rare 19th century hand carved ivory crucifix. The Christ figure is realistically rendered in carved ivory and set on a gilt wood cross. This sculpture is mounted within an elaborate frame, which is lined with blue silk damask and enriched with cobalt and gilt accents. The carving depicts the Savior wearing the Crown of Thorns and an elaborately draped perizonium held in place by a delicately carved rope. The crucifix is surmounted by an ivory titulus inscribed INRI -- "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum" - Latin for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."
This highly detailed carving is complete with no damage or repairs; due to the extreme fragility of ivory, it is very rare to find a carving so beautifully preserved. The silk damask lining is in very good condition with minimal signs of wear. This would indeed be a fine museum quality piece to add to your collection.
Measurements: Frame Height 19 3/4 in. Width 12 1/2 in. Ivory Sculpture Height (Head to Toe) 7 in. Width 5 3/4 in.
