Antique French Hand Painted Enamel Opera Glasses with Mother of Pearl and Ormolu.
France, 19th century
These lovely 19th century Napoleon III era French opera glasses are enameled in the Sevres style with hand painted scenes of romantic figures within a pastoral landscape setting. The gold glazed barrels are decorated in the extremely labor intensive process of painted enamelwork (the firing of glass over a metal base). The opera glasses are faceted with luxurious mother of pearl eyepieces and adjustment gauge.
These elegant French enamel opera glasses are of high quality and are in very good condition. There is no damage to the enamel barrels. There are a couple of tiny scratches on the gold glazed ground visible under very close inspection. The items in the last photograph are for display only and are not included.
