J T and Sons Annfield Pottery Versailles Tureen

J T and Sons Annfield Pottery Versailles Tureen

Graceful tureen with lid and handles made by J T and Sons Annfield Pottery in Scotland. The pattern includes roses, ribbons and cable rope. The handle on the lid has a hairline crack in the bottom of the loop where it meets the lid. There is also a hairline at one of the slender ends of the lid. There's some age discoloration, mostly in the interior of the bottom. No chips. Production flaw clay speck under glaze in interior bottom. Measures 13 1/2" x 16 1/2" x 6 1/2" tall. It has the mark of John Thomson of Annfield Pottery in Glasgow's Gallowgate. It is on the base of this blue and white transfer-printed and lustred earthenware serving dish dating from the late 19th century. The mark consists of two concentric circles surrounded by laurel wreaths on either side and a crown on the top. The inscription contained within the circles reads Versailles/J. T. & SONS. By the middle of the 19th century, the area of Glasgow and the Clyde basin was undoubtedly the heartland of the Scottish pottery industry, with several large pottery firms. Annfield Pottery operated from about 1826 to 1887.
