Redwork Penny Square Squirrels Embroidered Quilt Top
Turn of the century typical quilt top coverlet with hand embroidered penny squares of a squirrel on a leafy tree branch with acorn embroidered in Turkey Red floss sewn together without any sashing between the blocks.with feather stitch used to cover the seam lines. What's not typical is one pink embroidered squirrel in lower left corner and a pink and red block at the top edge. All the rest of the blocks are red. Preprinted squares ready to embroider were sold at the turn of the century for use with the colorfast turkey red thread. Because they originally cost only about a penny apiece they were commonly called penny squares. This is a beautiful example of the form. I've carefully hand washed and line dried and ironed. Measures 53 1/2" x 53 1/2" square. Would look fabulous displayed as is or easily finished into a comfort or quilt.
