This gorgeous vintage estate spoon is made of sterling silver and reads NIAGARA FALLS and INDIAN LEGEND on the handle. The handle depicts a nude woman in a canoe. This scene represents the Indian Legend of Lelawala the Maid of the Mist, who saved her people from a mysterious illness by sacrificing herself and going over the falls to appease the Thunder God Hinum.
As the story goes, the two sons of Hinum caught Lelawala as she went down and she promised to marry the one who told her why her people were ill. Turns out it was because a snake was poisoning the water and then eating the dead. The people then speared the snake and when it died, it died in a horseshoe shape...which is what gave Niagara Falls its shape. If you Google the legend, you can read a couple of very good versions of the tale.
The spoon measures about 5 1/4" long by about 15/16" across the bowl. It weighs about 16.1 grams. It is signed with the initials CM inside a diamond shape along with two other hallmarks and is marked STERLING. Very good condition with very light age wear and we have not polished it. Please see the other Niagara Falls Lelawala spoon we are offering. You will treasure this!!!
