Original copper plate engraved map of the "COUNTRIES of the SOUTH SEA from Panama to Guayquil. For the Rev. Dr. Robertsons History of America. By Thos. Kitchin Sen.' Hydographer to his Majesty". Comprising the area now known as Colombia, Ecuador and Panama (then known as "Kingdom of Terra Firma, New Granada, and Quito"). Published Sept. 29th, 1777 by Strahan and T. Cadell in the Strand (London). Highly detailed with numerous towns, rivers, lakes and mountains. A handsome cartouche on the left side above a distance scale in leagues=degrees and a small directional compass rose.
The map, on hand-layed paper, has the expected staining and foxing for an 18th century map and shows good strong plate marks around all borders. The left margin was clipped close and has been restored at a later period. It measures 10" X 15-1/4". It has been mounted in a 3" brown acid-free mat which results in a total size of 16" X 21-3/8".
Guaranteed an original period map, not a restrike or later print.
