A Creil et Montereau fine faience plate, circa 1870 – 1910, number 11 from the 'Bijoux de Paris' series by Charles Hamlet, printed in black and over painted in yellow, blue, turquoise, brown and magenta. It shows a well-dressed 19th century couple looking at jewellery. There is a printed factory mark on the back.
The Creil and Montereau factory created many long series of numbered views, influenced by English creamwares. This is a particularly attractive example, which is hard to find. Plates by the same artist in a similar series (‘Folies du Coeur’) are on display at the Musée Gallé-Juillet and listed on the French Government’s Culture Website.
The plate measures 20cm (8 inches) in diameter. There are two small chips to the rim and several scratches, see photos, but but it is otherwise in good condition.
