1920's Art Deco Assuit Shawl

With the discovery of King Tut's tomb in the early 1920's came a love affair with Egyptian fashion. Wealthy travelers returned from Egypt with souvenirs, arguably none more versatile and timeless than the Assuit shawl! (In Arabic, these creations are referred to as 'tulle-bi-telli'~ meaning 'net with metal'). Fashioned from strong Egyptian cotton net and beautifully designed silver metal geometric formations, Assuit shawls from this period were no simple creation.

This particular shawl features a quite dense hammered silver metal art deco design. Measuring approximately 88" x 26" unexpanded (they stretch) it's ground is the cover of off-white ivory. A beautiful pale golden patina appears on the metal design.

Pictured here with a vintage metallic braid belt (not included but available upon request), in one of countless ways to don this gorgeous 1920's textile!

No damage to note. Excellent vintage condition; a couple of quite small touches of rust. Recommend light hand washing with oxyclean and a touch of rust remover to brighten, if desired.
