A beautifully made, beyond precious circa turn of the century French pierrot (mime) themed child's parasol stamped -Fabrication Francaise- on the wooden handle, measuring 17" long, the celluloid pierrot handle measuring 3 5/8" x 1 1/2" at it's widest, 22" diameter when fully opened measured at the cloth, 24" diameter measured from the black wood tips of the metal ribs. The celluloid pierrot handle is exquisite~ detailed in the round. The muslin fabric of the parasol is no longer vibrant with what was once magnificent French dyes. It is now charmingly faded and a tad worse for wear, but delightful none the less in it's French blues and oranges and those adorable black, white & red faces. It looks delightful on display~ perhaps opened and suspended upside-down above a child's bed or a baby's cradle.
Condition is good to very good. Exquisitely made. The celluloid handle in excellent condition. Ribs or spines are strong and in place. Fabric has a hole at the tip that we recommend backing to preserve the piece; a few very small holes in the muslin and a bit of fading and darkening. Rust at the top of the slats. But to my mind, a treasure for decorator and collector alike.
