Pair of Japanese Four-Panel Genroku Screens "Tales of Genji"

Pair of Japanese four–panel screens from the Tosa School, depicting court life during the Heian period, scene is from the book "Tales of Genji", by Lady Murasaki during the Heian period (794-1192), finely detailed outdoor scene with male and female figures wearing elaborate clothing, with highly embossed gold-leaf clouds throughout. These screens are from the Genroku period (1688-1704), which is the Golden Age of the Edo period (1603-1868). The cloth borders are embroidered and enclosed in a black wood frame. They are painted with colored pigments, and the background is gold-leafed. The condition show signs of age throughout, but in good condition. Provenance: Mr. Toranosuke Shioyama, collector, deceased in 1958, Seiichi Kirihara, collector's possession until 1964. They were presumably presented by the Tokugawa shogunate to a court noble.
