A set of matryoshka dolls contains a wooden figure which separates, top from bottom, to reveal a smaller figure of the similar kind inside, which in turn, has another figure inside of it, etc.. The number of nested figures is usually at least five. Traditionally the most outside layer is a woman, dressed in a sarafan. The word "matryoshka" (матрёшка), literally "little matron", or a diminutive form of the Russian female.
This set which is hand painted with loving detail contains the typical five dolls. The furthest outside doll is about 2 and 3/4 inches tall. There are no markings, or labels, so their history is unknown. They are in very good, nearly pristine, condition.
