Flying Colors ceramic jewelry is always fun and often whimsical. This 2.75 inch long is a soft blue No. 2 marked ceramic pencil, probably from Flying Colors. Very similar jewelry was also produced by its predecessor company, Parrot Pearls, and by a later company formed by PP founders, Ruby Z. This pencil pin is ready to made its mark on your wardrobe!
Condition: Very good - there is a tiny dent below the "N" and minor signs of crazing in the glaze. Please review all photographs as they form an important part of the description.
Marks: no marks.
Company History: The original company was called Parrot Pearls and was founded in 1975 in San Francisco. Their trademark, easily recognizable pieces are ceramic jewelry in fanciful shapes such as animals, flowers, and incorporating colorful beads made into necklaces and pins. These were artisan companies with hand finished products. Parrot Pearls split off in the 1980's into Flying Colors (run by former Parrot Pearl employees) and into Ruby Z, owned by two of the original founders of PP, Bean Finneran and Candace Loheed. The Ruby Z, Flying Colors and Parrot Pearls were never mass produced and have been featured in collectors' books such as Ann Mitchell Pitman's "Inside the Jewelry Box, Vol. 2" (pages 7 -13) and Kathy Flood's "Warman's Jewelry Guide, 4th Ed." (pages 219 - 221).
