Antique Sandpaper Drawing c.1860 Marble Dust Painting

I love sandpaper drawings! I'm always happy to get them. They are also known as marble dust paintings. The marble dust causes these pieces to sparkle when light hits them a certain way. This was a popular medium for amateur artists in the mid 19th century. This drawing is large and nicely done. Depicted is a Hudson River type scene of a castle on a hill top is surrounded by mountains and lush trees. In the river below are three men in a row boat. The artist added a lot of detail to the leaves that makes them seem they are shimmering in the sunlight (or moonlight if you prefer). The sky is lively and interesting. The drawing is housed in a gold leaf frame. The frame presents very well, but has a few small chips in the gesso and has been touched up here and there. The back of the piece has a recent paper dust cover and wire. The drawing has light rubs/ lines. These don't really stand out, but can be seen close up. Measurements are about 21" x 26" overall, 16.75" x 21.75" sight. Wonderful piece.
