This stunning covered compote is huge standing 16" tall! It's Irish, made about 1790-1800. The bowl and lid are cut with a diamond and flute pattern. The base has a pressed lemon squeezer foot. The lid and finial were made separately as were the bowl and foot. The sparkling clear glass has a bit of a gray cast to it. Its condition is very good. The surface is sparkling with very little wear. The very tip of the finial is nipped and there is a good amount of base wear. Chips have been smoothed out at two corners of the foot along the way. There are two spots on the rim that have small chips. One of those areas was previously ground down a bit at the outside edge. Much magnified views are in the collage photo. There are two views of the corner with the larger flaw. None of the flaws are unsightly or large and the rim chips are hidden by the lid. The large size of this piece makes it a rare find. It will make an impression where ever it is displayed. Enjoy it empty or fill it with goodies. Gorgeous either way.
