Physicians' Anatomical Aid, A Manikin of Superimposed Diagramatic Plates Designed to Assist in Surgery Diagnoses and General Practice. ~ Suydam J. Knox, D.W. Graham, J.E. Owens ~ Western Publishing House, Chicago 1889.
This impressive flip book was designed to aid in the study of the human anatomy. The green cloth portfolio is titled in gilt and has metal clasps to close. The portfolio can be folded to form a triangular stand with boards hinged along the top edge that can be flipped to form different displays. The richly colored chromolitho anatomical plates all have many folding overlays. When the overlays are flipped, deeper and deeper views of that section of the body are revealed. These overlays are held in place by metal swivel tabs. The sheets and overlays are backed with linen for strength. The sheet that represents the skin of the torso is printed on a more sheer backing for more realistic effect. All parts of the body are represented in the plates including male and female reproductive organs. This large piece measures 15" x 22". It's quite heavy weighing about 9 pounds.
Overall, this piece is in very good condition. Clean and sound. It's in its original canvas outer bag which shows wear and lacks its clasp. The metal tab portion of the clasp on the portfolios flap is present, but has come off. There are light damp stains along one top corner of the plates as well as gentle ripples in that same area. (see photos) The fabric hinge is loose on 2 pages at that same corner. Some paper damage at spots along one edge of a few plates (from pages sticking together). Most of this can be seen in the photos.
